Compatibility
The GoToob+ is made of high-purity, FDA food-safe silicone. Silicone is one of the safest and most inert materials in common commercial use (heck, baby bottle nipples are made from the stuff!). It's not cheap material, but we decided to use silicone for the fantastic performance and safety it affords. However, no material is completely impervious. While the GoToob+ line works great with thousands of different fluids, sometimes a fluid can react, affecting the silicone of a tube, altering the fluid, or both. This is due to reactivity with silicone itself and isn't limited to the specific silicone we use for GoToob+. Also remember that the GoToob+ line is designed for travel, not long-term storage. Some products may change state (dry out or become less viscous) if kept in a GoToob+ for months at a time.
It is a good idea when using any product in a GoToob+ for the first time either to test a small amount overnight or to pack the GoToob+ in a leak proof bag for protection. We will happily replace your GoToob+ with a new one if there are any issues, but we can't say the same for whatever else you packed in your suitcase!
Non-Recommended
While the range of chemicals used in modern cosmetic and personal care products makes comprehensive compatibility testing impossible, we have consistently noticed problems with the following chemical groups/product types and recommend against using them in a GoToob+:
-Salicylic Acid (most often used in acne treatments).
-Hair serums and treatments (detanglers, relaxers, volumizers, polishers, smoothers, shine serums, etc.) including shampoos and conditioners designed to add shine or luster to hair as well as products with Argan Oil (like Moroccan hair oil).
-Silicone-based lubricants.
-DEET-based insect repellents.
-Hydrogen Peroxide.
-Sterile products. Note: Even though sterile products may be fully compatible with silicone, GoToob+ are not sterilized. Therefore, we don't recommend GoToob+ for use with fluids where sterilization may be an issue, such as contact lens solution. This includes liquid or semi-liquid prescription medications.
-Caustic, corrosive, or flammable products. Note: Many household chemicals are sold in specifically designed plastic or glass containers specified by the manufacturer and should never be decanted. GoToob+ were designed for personal care or food items you may need while traveling--not bleach, drain cleaner, fire-starters, or hydrochloric acid.
Recommend Testing First
The following products are compatible with the GoToob+ in most cases. However, we've heard of problems in some cases when using these products and recommend testing a small amount in a GoToob+ overnight before general use or travel.
-Alcohols (Note: Alcohols may be present in many cosmetic products, including make-up remover, mouth wash, astringent, hair serum, aftershave, and insect repellent). GoToob+ is made with high purity silicone which is slightly permeable to some contents. Alcohol can very slowly evaporate through the silicone material. If there is a high concentration of alcohol, it is more likely to evaporate quickly so some of these products cannot be used or can only be used for a short period of time. For more information on alcohol in GoToob+, please see the FAQ section above.
-Almond butter.
-Liquid sweeteners (especially Stevia).
-Essential oils.
-Sunscreen and tanning lotions.
-Skin conditioning oil formulations.
-Castille soap.
Note: You will know if your fluid is incompatible if it leaks, changes the shape or color of the silicone tube, evaporates from the tube, or dries up shortly after being put in the tube. Most reactions occur overnight; this is why we recommend an overnight trial run with a new product.
Tips
Bag it for insurance:
GoToob+ tubes won't leak under normal circumstances; however, accidents can happen. Those luggage handlers can sometimes be brutal, caps don't get tightened fully, etc. We recommend that you always put your tubes in a sealed "Ziplock" style bag for insurance against unfortunate "Murphy's Law" episodes.
Broken cap, damaged tube, or other issue?
Has a wild elephant stormed through your bathroom, stepped on a GoToob+, and broken the cap? Have you accidentally cut your tube with a sharp Ginsu knife right after cutting through a soda can? These things happen. We stand behind our products--everything we make comes with a lifetime warranty.
Please contact us if you have problems with your GoToob+. Please be sure to provide your mailing address.
I only want to dispense a small amount of the fluid I put in my GoToob+, but a lot of the fluid comes out. What can I do?
The GoToob+ has been designed to work with a wide range of fluids--from soft food products to thin liquid soaps. This means that the valve has been designed to dispense a wide range of viscosities. We find that the best way to get a small amount of a thin fluid is to squeeze the tube quickly--the longer the squeeze, the longer the valve is open and thus the more fluid dispensed.
What are the care and cleaning instructions for GoToob+?
The tubes and collars are dishwasher safe (top rack only). The flip caps can be hand-washed in warm, soapy water.
Can a part of my GoToob+ be replaced under the lifetime warranty?
Yes. In your warranty request email, please let us know what has happened and what part needs to be replaced.
Why do some fluids dry up if left in my GoToob+ for months?
These types of reactions can occur because of the porousness of silicone. While some fluids can dry up, this is usually over several months. We've received reports that adding a small amount of water can restore fluids to their normal state. One of the products that tends to evaporate if left in a GoToob+ over a long period of time is Dr. Bronner's soap (since it's so concentrated). The goods news is that adding a bit of water and letting it sit for a few hours will re-liquify this product.
Can I purchase more flip caps?
Yes. Be sure to view the information on the flip cap page to make sure you are purchasing the correct caps (the GoToob+ caps are different than the original GoToob caps, and they are not interchangeable). Click here to purchase caps (*only original GoToob caps available at this time). Please note tubes and collars are not included.
What kind of hand sanitizer can I put in a GoToob+?
While a number of hand sanitizers are compatible with silicone (including Purell), we found that homemade hand sanitizer works best. Here’s the recipe we recommend: 2 parts alcohol to 1 part Aloe vera. For a large (100ml) GoToob+ that would be 67ml of alcohol and 33ml of Aloe vera. You can also add a few drops of the essential oil of your choice to add a nice scent.
How long is hand sanitizer good in a GoToob+?
GoToob+ is made with high purity silicone which is slightly permeable to some contents. The alcohol in hand sanitizer can very slowly evaporate through the silicone material. The concentration of alcohol in hand sanitizer varies anywhere from 60~90%, with 70% being a common standard. When used with 70% alcohol sanitizer, our testing has indicated the sanitizer will be good (i.e. have a concentration of alcohol higher than 60%) for roughly 2~3 weeks. If you haven't used up the sanitizer in your GoToob+ within that time, we recommended refilling or replacing the sanitizer with fresh product. If you use sanitizer with alcohol content higher than 70%, then the period of effectiveness in a GoToob+ would be even longer than 3 weeks.
